The Vision.

When did it begin?

By Rev. Sam Lai

The Main Building Revitalization Project (MBRP) is an integral part of a long-term vision of the SFCAC development.  This vision and strategy is grounded on our church’s full conviction and commitment in fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) to make disciples of all nations, by optimizing and using the gifts (including our talents and physical facilities) God entrusted to us, His stewards.

The Great Commission is followed by a strategic plan stated in Acts 1:8 (NIV), “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” This strategic plan began with believers witnessing in Jerusalem to mainly religious Jews, and then in all of Judea to the Hellenistic Jews under the influence of Greco-Roman culture. The strategic plan of witnessing continued out to Samaria and to the ends of the earth.  Beginning at the epicenter, Jerusalem, the early church expanded like the rippling effects of concentric circles. The power of the Holy Spirit enabled the early church to grow strong and they were able to send disciples to all of Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Therefore, a healthy, Spirit filled local church is essential in the work of missions. Furthermore, the work of missions returned as a blessing to the sending church. One great example was recorded in one of Paul’s missionary journeys; he raised financial resources from overseas to help alleviate the famine in Jerusalem.  Praise the Lord, a cycle of blessings, building up, sending out, and benefiting each other, began. The strategic plan of the Great Commission was made complete in Christ.

Likewise today, SFCAC is called to be a Great Commission church with the same strategic plan.  While global mission is a part of our DNA, we are reminded of the importance of building up a strong and solid local church. The stronger we are locally, the better we can support and make a sustainable impact in overseas missions.  I have been prayerfully asking God, “How do we honor God as faithful stewards in using our gifts?”  As a member of the SFCAC family, we must ask ourselves, “What are our gifts and how could we optimize the  use of our gifts (our talents and facilities) to advance the Kingdom of God?”

SFCAC has talents. We are a multilingual and multi-generational church with three congregations of Mandarin, English and Cantonese speakers whose place of origin may be the USA or another country like  Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Venezuela, to name a few. We have professionals and people with different skill sets from all walks of life – designers, engineers, architects, contractors, accountants, healthcare workers (doctors, therapists, nurses, pharmacists…), businessmen, realtors, IT techs, counselors, social workers, teachers, students, and so on.  We have people in different life stages: infants, toddlers, children, youth, young adults, singles, couples, families with kids, empty-nesters, retirees, grandparents, and those who are not too old.  These vast and diverse SFCAC talents are blessings graciously given by our Heavenly Father for His purpose.

For His purpose, our Heavenly Father has graciously and uniquely provided us with facilities, the three buildings: The Main Church Building, the Bridge Community Center (BCC), and the Multi-Activity Center (MAC). These three buildings are distinctively and strategically located in the vicinity of Vicente Street and 23rd Avenue. The Main Church Building, with approximately 12,373 sq. ft. (Permitted use of space), is a precious treasure in the heart of a very expensive San Francisco neighborhood, Parkside. It houses church ministries such as worship services, Sunday school, fellowships, children ministries and offices for staff. The MAC and BCC, located within a block from the Main Church Building, serves as the community outreach arm of the church with pre-Gospel work such as community need-based programs, activities and services for the needy. A strategic plan to expand like the early church and advance the Kingdom of God can be a non-profit organization, under the supervision of the church governing board, housed in the BCC and MAC. A non-profit organization will enable unlimited opportunities to provide services such as day time elderly care, counseling, social work, children care, exercise rooms, recording rooms, tutoring, educational or interest classes, etc.

My prayer is for all of us in the SFCAC family to be diligently exercising our spiritual talents and optimizing our facilities as a Great Commission church with a strategic plan.  To advance the Kingdom of God, I pray that SFCAC can continue to be a vibrant healthy church where the Gospel is shared in a relevant way both locally in Parkside San Francisco and globally.  Are you ready to join us to embark on this amazing journey?

May the Words of God and our Savior Jesus Christ be the encouragement and exhortation for us in fully exercising our gifts for His Kingdom, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14).
